Minnesota’s Cannabis Regulatory Chief Resigns Amid Allegations of Illegal Sales at Her Store

Minnesota’s appointed leader for regulating cannabis, Erin DuPree, has announced her resignation amidst allegations that her cannabis store, Loonacy, sold illegal products. This development comes just one day after Governor Tim Walz appointed her as the first director of the Office of Cannabis Management.

Reports suggest that products sold at DuPree’s store exceeded legal THC concentrations and contained ingredients prohibited by state law. In response, DuPree stated that she had removed noncompliant products from inventory once she became aware of them, emphasizing her commitment to lawful business practices.

DuPree, a respected small business owner and entrepreneur, acknowledged the distraction her situation posed to the important work of cannabis regulation. Governor Walz had initially praised her extensive experience in Minnesota’s cannabis and hemp industry, expressing confidence in her ability to lead the Office of Cannabis Management.

Senior state government aide Charlene Briner, overseeing the hiring process, had lauded DuPree’s experience and credibility during the announcement of her appointment. Despite DuPree’s departure, Walz remained focused on building community trust and ensuring a well-regulated cannabis industry in Minnesota.

With DuPree’s resignation, the Office of Cannabis Management is currently without a permanent director. Minnesota’s inaugural non-reservation cannabis stores are anticipated to open in 2025.
