Thai Prime Minister Announces Reclassification of Cannabis as Narcotic by End of 2024

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced on social media that by the end of 2024, cannabis would be re-listed as a narcotic in Thailand. This decision marks a significant reversal from the country’s previous stance, which had decriminalized its recreational use in 2022.

Thavisin emphasized the need for the health ministry to swiftly amend regulations, permitting cannabis strictly for health and medical purposes. Despite the initial decriminalization, Thavisin, known for his opposition to recreational cannabis use, cited concerns about potential drug abuse issues. The move aims to address criticisms regarding the haphazard policy changes and regulatory confusion surrounding cannabis sales and usage, particularly within the burgeoning small business sector dedicated to cannabis products.
